Build the scalable test automation platform that powers EV charger validation, manufacturing, and product quality worldwide. At ABB E-mobility, we are accelerating the future of sustainable transportation through innovative EV charging solutions. We are looking for a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to join our Operations Test Engineering team and lead the development of a shared test automation platform supporting engineering validation, system integration, and manufacturing test environments. This is a highly software-focused role where you will design, develop, and industrialize the test toolchain used across E2E test benches, hardware-in-the-loop environments, pilot lines, and end-of-line manufacturing stations. Your work will directly improve release confidence, product quality, manufacturing readiness, traceability, defect containment, and the scalability of automated testing across the entire EV charging ecosystem.
Your Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain a scalable, modular, and reusable automated test framework supporting end-to-end validation, system integration, regression testing, release qualification, hardware-in-the-loop environments, and manufacturing test execution.
- Develop production-grade software for test orchestration, equipment control, measurement acquisition, diagnostics, result evaluation, reporting, recovery mechanisms, and reliable execution across validation and manufacturing environments.
- Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines, enabling pull-request validation, regression execution, software-build qualification, release gates, artifact management, result publication, and controlled deployment of test software.
- Build software interfaces connecting chargers, embedded controllers, charging communication stacks, PLCs, programmable power supplies, electronic loads, instruments, thermal systems, safety devices, production fixtures, cloud services, databases, and manufacturing systems.
- Create automated tests for APIs, services, firmware interfaces, communication protocols, charging workflows, diagnostics, error handling, recovery scenarios, and complete charger-to-cloud or charger-to-manufacturing-system use cases.
- Define and maintain structured test data, logs, measurement records, pass/fail criteria, requirement traceability, software and firmware versioning, equipment configurations, calibration information, and release-evidence packages supporting quality and deployment decisions.
- Continuously improve framework reliability, maintainability, execution speed, and diagnostic capabilities by reducing flaky tests, minimizing false failures, optimizing retry logic, improving observability, and supporting evolving products and manufacturing processes.
- Develop reusable libraries, templates, configuration models, documentation, coding standards, examples, and utilities that enable software, validation, and manufacturing teams to contribute automated tests consistently and efficiently.
- Support release governance by defining automated quality gates, regression scope, coverage expectations, version baselines, test reports, known limitations, go/no-go criteria, security controls, configuration management, dependency management, and controlled deployment practices while collaborating across software, firmware, validation, DevOps, manufacturing, quality, field service, IT/OT, and supplier organizations.
Your Background
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Automation Engineering, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical discipline.
- Strong software engineering experience with one or more modern programming languages such as Python, C#, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, or similar, with the ability to develop clean, maintainable, modular, testable, and version-controlled software.
- Proven experience designing, developing, or contributing to automated test frameworks supporting API, integration, system, regression, and end-to-end testing.
- Solid hands-on experience with Git-based development workflows, code reviews, CI/CD pipelines, artifact management, automated execution, release gates, and deployment of test software.
- Experience testing and automating REST APIs, backend services, device interfaces, diagnostic commands, cloud integrations, and end-to-end product workflows across complex distributed systems.
- Understanding of manufacturing and industrial test environments, including end-of-line stations, fixtures, operator workflows, MES integration, serial-number management, traceability, retest strategies, cycle-time optimization, and first-pass-yield improvement.
- Familiarity with laboratory and production equipment integration, including programmable power supplies, electronic loads, oscilloscopes, power analyzers, DAQ systems, PLCs, contactors, thermal systems, safety devices, and communication interfaces.
- Strong knowledge of test design and quality engineering principles, including traceability, risk-based testing, boundary testing, negative testing, regression strategies, defect prevention, root-cause analysis, flaky-test reduction, structured logging, reporting, dashboards, diagnostics, and quality metrics.
- Understanding of EV charging systems, power electronics, embedded control systems, electrical measurements, safety requirements, and system-level validation methodologies.
- Experience with Azure DevOps, Jira, Confluence/Wiki, SharePoint, Teams, Git, and related collaboration tools, combined with excellent documentation and communication skills, a strong ownership mindset, analytical problem-solving capabilities, focus on quality and continuous improvement, and fluent written and spoken English.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of EV charging standards such as OCPP, IEC 61851, and ISO 15118; experience with Azure cloud services for test automation, analytics, reporting, and system integration; exposure to distributed systems, microservices architectures, performance, load, and security testing; and formal training or certifications in Test Automation, Software Testing, Quality Assurance, Agile, or DevOps practices are considered strong advantages.
