We are looking for a Trade Compliance Specialist. In this role you will support ABB E-mobility management in ensuring that activities are conducted in line with Trade policies and guidelines. Key focus is the oversight of compliance with all applicable customs, sanctions and export control regulations. Additionally, you will provide local hands-on support in case of trade related issues, guidance in compliance improvement initiatives and the pursuit of strategic trade objectives. In the role you will report to the Trade Compliance Officer (TCO).
Location: Italy – San Giovanni Valdarno, with support to other EU countries (especially the Netherlands) and selected non-EU countries (Switzerland, United Kingdom, Norway)
Your responsibilities
- Serve as point of contact for trade compliance topics within ABB E-mobility business across European countries, leveraging external expertise where required. Provide direct support for Italy and contribute to compliance operations in other EU and non-EU countries.
- Shipments & Customs Compliance: Ensure transaction-based compliance with customs regulations (value, preferential and non-preferential origin determination and rules, product classification). Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams (master data, procurement, logistics, sales) to fully integrate trade compliance into daily operations. A basic understanding of import and export documentation processes is required, including Incoterm verification and duty/tariff calculation for international shipments, using basic online tools for customs duty analysis.
- Product Classification (HTS / TARIC): monitor the Product Classification Engineer (PCE) that has the responsibility to apply the correct Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) classification of all products, maintaining data accuracy and consistency across systems.
- Export Control (EAR, Dual Use, Supplier Declarations): Monitor, together with PCE, the applicability of export control regulations under the EU Dual Use Regulation and U.S. EAR (including General Prohibitions, Country Chart, and License Exceptions). Demonstrate familiarity with Supplier Declarations to assess whether purchased (“buy”) and manufactured (“make”) products fall under dual-use license requirements.
- Broker Management (Import/Export): Coordinate with customs brokers to ensure timely and compliant clearance operations. Manage customs documentation requests, declarations, and responses to any official inquiries issued by customs authorities.
- Oversee documentation and archiving to ensure that all trade compliance records are properly maintained and retrievable, in line with ABB internal policies and legal requirements.
- Support internal and external audits, manage trade facilitation programs, authorizations, and permits, and oversee follow-up actions from ABB Group or authorities’ inspections.
- Training programs: Proactive mindset with the ability to promote and strengthen trade compliance culture through engaging training initiatives across all business functions.
- EU Regulations (CBAM & EUDR): Support compliance with Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) requirements, including supplier communication and data collection activities.
- U.S. Customs and Trade Regulations: Maintain awareness of U.S. trade and duty regulations, using online databases and official tools (e.g. U.S. HTS, US Section 232) to analyze duties, restrictions, and regulatory requirements for U.S.-related shipments.
- Due Diligence & Screening: Conduct customer and supplier due diligence using professional tools ensuring compliance with global sanctions and restricted party lists.
- Audit & Process Compliance: Perform or support TCO for trade compliance audits, ensuring adherence to ABB trade policies and regulatory procedures, and driving continuous improvement in compliance controls.
- System Expertise (SAP / SAP GTS): a good familiarity with S/4HANA and SAP GTS is a plus.
- End User Certificate (EUC): Ensure compliance with ABB policies on End User Certificates, particularly for high-risk destinations or potential diversion-risk customers, managing issuance, review, and record-keeping of EUCs in coordination with ABB Trade Compliance Dept.
- Develop and implement risk management strategies to monitor, control, and mitigate trade compliance risks. Lead local trade compliance reviews or audits, and promptly report any suspected violations to the Trade Compliance Officer.
Your background
- Degree in Business, Logistics, Economics, Degree in Law - Authorized Economic Operator (AEO Certification) is a plus
- 2+ years of combined Customs and Trade Compliance experience at corporate multi-national company, preferably in industrial environment. Experience with business processes and a good understanding of end-to-end supply chain process, risk management and logistics is required.
- Knowledge of export control and customs rules and regulations is essential, but there is room for development of expertise in the start-up phase for the role
- Good predisposition to effectively communicate across all levels of the local business. Business mind-set, responsiveness, ownership, self-driven, willingness to explore and learn with the support of TCO.
- Team player with good communication skills, capable of communicating in English and in the main local language (of the authorities), both verbally and in writing
- Helpful, not mandatory: technical knowledge of products, software and applied technologies in the scope of the Business (willingness to learn should be there)
- Proactive and adaptable team player, able to handle multiple topics efficiently and build strong daily collaboration across functions.
